About: Tim Haley

Tim Haley has been a professor of music at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC since 1983. He directed the SCC Jazz Band and taught Applied Percussion, Music Theory, Music Appreciation and Jazz Appreciation. He also served as Department Chair for the Associate in Fine Arts program. In 2008, he received the Sandhills Community College Excellence in Teaching Award and was a finalist for the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges statewide Excellence in Teaching Award. He currently is retired from full time teaching. But he continues to serve as an Adjunct Instructor at Sandhills Community College and Richmond Community College in Hamlet, NC.

Playing drum set professionally for over 40 years

He has extensive experience in a variety of styles and ensembles. Pit experience runs the gamut from “Showboat” to “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”. Jazz experience ranges from progressive jazz combos to big band swing. In the studio, he has recorded with a variety of groups, composers and arrangers. He has experience on all percussion instruments – especially drum set – from classical to contemporary musical styles. Currently, he is performing with the Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra (Principal Percussionist), the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, the Moore County Concert Band, The Band Paris, and several other area jazz, gospel, and rock groups.

Prior to coming to Sandhills, he taught junior and senior high school band in Greenville, NC and performed regularly with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. In 1980, he received a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. While at Lawrence, he studied percussion with Scott Prebys and conducting with David Becker. In 1982, he received a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. While at ECU, he was a graduate teaching assistant and studied percussion with Harold Jones.
